And so I was thinking about people today. Humanity, and the way we act from moment to moment in our lives. Call me a student of psychology or just someone making an observation, but I believe there are certain things we should watch out for in our mental processes.
We like to cut corners, I don't know a single person that would disagree with that. When the corners we cut are outside of us physically, and we can see physical results and consequences of our actions, it becomes easier to keep an eye out for. It's easier to look at and say, "Wow, maybe I shouldn't do that next time." or at least acknowledge the existence of it.
In the mind, however, cutting these mental corners can't be seen - because it's not outside of us - so it becomes harder to catch on to. In my own life, I've witnessed one or two and want to point them out for all to see.
I need to quit putting my brain on autopilot. It's so easy to go around day to day and run off of my own macro system. When a situation arises that I can easily remember my last response to, it's much less effort to simply regurgitate ideas that I've already come up with than to come up with something new every time. I find myself looking for these opportunities now; instead of storing new information, I immediately convert it into a shortcut for future reference.
I would contest that in order to truly progress ourselves and each other we need to minimize this 'autopilot mechanism' within us to only situations that require a quicker reference than usual. When not, it's just like relying on a mere convenience to sustain you - not unlike relying on something like Jon Stewart's show for your news source.
